I tried using that DISKS application and found it to be very easy. Access to the disks stopped but later when I switched off that option I still get the following error !Įrror mounting system-managed device /dev/sda7: Command-line `mount "/mnt/36aacb04-db99-4f69-8b64-80688ffd2266"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Once I tried to stop access of the other partition's area in one of them through DISKS (by using Edit Mount Options > Need Extra Authorisation to Mount).

I am a little scared of that DISKS application. Yes, you can use the Disks application available by default :įormat partition > Type Encrypted, compatible with Linux Systems (Luks + ext4) > Name is optional, enter your passphrase twice > Format May be it is called On The Fly or something.Ĭan anyone suggest some suitable tool for this kind of need. I would like to encrypt the entire HDDs and would like to selectively access data and add more data etc. If it is GUI based then it is even better.

Even if it is not the 'most secure' encryption tool but still it is easily available and easily supported. One that is independent of dependencies and usually works with most Debian or Ubuntu based OS. Is there any kind of tool that is available in DEB form which I could keep with me for future use, in case it is no more supported / available. One big drawback that I see with many tools is that the software stops its development or for any reason it is not supported in the version of Mint (or any other debian / ubuntu based OS) I would be using in future, then it might be very difficult to recover my data. Though there are many tools available but I am not very sure which ones are easy, secured and reliable. My most important need is privacy of that data and easy and reliable way to be able to access it even after long term. It is not accessed too frequently, may be about once or twice a month. I have to store large amounts of data in external USB HDD and at times move around with it.

I am a newbie when it comes to encryption.
